Utilizing the Dick and Carey Instructional Design Model

Adult learning is simplified with the use of different instructional design models that provide guidelines or frameworks to organize the process. These models help guide the learning team through the creation of the lesson.

Using the Dick and Carey Model, I created a training presentation for Website Specialists to discuss SEO and the use of copywriting. That is to say, this presentation utilizes this easy-to-use instructional design method.

8 Simplified Steps of the Dick and Carey Model

  1. Present Instructional Goals
    1. The goal of this specific training was to teach Website Specialists all about copywriting, the benefits, the types of copywriting, and how to utilize it.
  2. Analysis of Current Skills & Skills Needed
    1. The first few slides outline the assessment of why this training is important and how copywriting can affect SLA.
  3. Discuss Performance Objectives
    1. The objective is to understand SEO and the content-writing process and utilize it on every future project.
  4. Incorporate Assessment Instruments
    1. Throughout the training were several questions for the agents to answer regarding the previous section.
    2. This encourages engagement and assesses agents’ understanding of the lesson being taught.
  5. Develop Lesson Plan Outline
    1. Incorporated in the presentation is an agenda that explains an outline of what to expect.
    2. At the end of the presentation is a set of goals for moving forward and what we should focus on and improve.
  6. Present Instructional Materials
    1. This was presented to all tenured agents as well as new-hires in a 1-hour zoom session.
  7. Design & Conduct Evaluation
    1. New-Hires were tested on their knowledge after the lesson utilizing a standard test with 10 questions regarding items discussed in the lesson.
    2. An eLearning was created for all new-hires and tenured agents, utilizing the same material and additional assessment questions
    3. A copywriting newsletter was created and is now being sent out bi-weekly with updated statistics regarding the amount of sites and pages requesting copywriting for all new-builds.
  8. Revise as needed
    1. Multiple iterations were created with several revisions.
      1. First Draft of Training
      2. Final Powerpoint Presentation presented via Zoom
      3. eLearning created with assistance from Learning & Talent team

To clarify, the usual model usually includes 9-10 steps. However, I simplify this model by consolidating a couple steps. If you’d like to learn more about this Instructional Design model, click here.
